Lovers' Kiss photo by Pedro Ribeiro SimesHave you ever thought about your sex life’s carbon footprint? Probably not. Yet soy candles, bamboo bed sheets and hemp-silk negligees are giving a new—and much more flattering—meaning to being green in bed. From flirting to post-coital cuddling, not to mention the other fun stuff in between, there are many ways to please both your partner and the Earth. Here are a few of EcoHearth's favorite green sex tips and seduction secrets that might surprise even Cupid.

Be-Fore Play
Consider buying organic flowers to win the affections of a potential eco-conscious paramour, or to remind a longstanding one that your passion still burns brightly. Take no chances by adding a delicious and much-appreciated gift of fair-trade chocolate. Then invite your Earth-loving crush to join you for a home-cooked dinner. If you live within walking distance of each other, suggest the two of you take a romantic—and nonpolluting—stroll to your place.

Setting the Mood
Be certain the lights are turned down low. It not only signals your possibly devilish intentions, but also reduces your energy use, something your eco honey is sure to appreciate. Or turn the lights off entirely and rely on all-natural illumination. Sustainable soy candles are your best bet. Fortunately, they come in a wide variety of intriguing scents and sensuous colors. Here's how to choose the best or make them yourself.

Food and Drink
A bottle of biodynamic wine is a time-honored way to provide a relaxing start to a sensual evening. Follow it up with a delicious dinner of local, organic and mostly vegetarian or vegan cuisine. Bonus points if you grew the vegetables yourself from heirloom seeds in your community or home garden. This will make you an eco rock star in the eyes of your green object of desire.

What’s for Dessert
For dessert, offer your love organic strawberries and a cup of fair-trade coffee, followed by a luxurious back rub. Who could resist the sensory pleasures of a deep massage, especially when facilitated by slippery, scented and sustainable organic oils? If your massage skills are rusty or nil, bone up with one of these helpful massage books.

The best place for a massage is, conveniently, lying in bed. An added lure to your lair, if you need one, could be your bamboo sheets. Forget silk; bamboo is just as soft and satiny. Plus it fights moisture, has natural antimicrobial properties, comes from a rapidly renewable resource and is just plain sexy.

Saving Water
Post-massage is a good time to offer a shower to wash off the massage oil. And what kind of environmentalist would you be if you didn’t suggest showering together—to save on water, of course? A hot shower is also known to raise body temperature, promote relaxation and spike the libido.

Undress for Success
After you dry off with your organic cotton towels, you might consider changing into something more comfortable. Just make sure it’s both sexy and eco-friendly. Your Earth-lovin' woman will be most impressed if it’s lingerie made of organic or fair-trade cotton, bamboo or another natural and renewable fiber. Men might be more inclined to slip into some organic tighty-whities or boxers. And be ready with some hemp or organic cotton bathrobes for sustainable, post-pleasure snuggling. Of course, the most ecological gear is no gear at all. That’s right, consider going au naturel and enjoying the luxurious feel of silky-smooth bamboo sheets on every inch of your skin.

Toy Time
Once you make it back to the bedroom, relaxed and clean, why not play with some eco-friendly sex toys as a prelude to lovemaking? Keep toxins out of your bedroom with the line of natural ones from Earth Erotics. Just make sure any that require power are loaded with rechargeable batteries.

If lubricants are your style, opt for a non-petroleum, non-chemical one. Firefly Organics, for example, makes its intimate moisturizing cream from 100%-natural ingredients like cocoa and shea butter.

Eco Dating
Haven’t yet found that special tree-hugging someone? No worries. Hooking up with a green lover isn’t as hard as you might think. For starters, seek out venues that attract environmentally conscious types like you. Health-food stores, co-ops, organic groceries, farmers markets, community gardens and environmental organizations are just a few. If you prefer the online route, try one of many great green-friendly online dating services. They provide a targeted audience, making it easier to find someone who shares your green passion—both in and out of bed.

As any psychologist will tell you, shared values are the basis for a sustainable relationship. And green sex between eco-conscious lovers makes your romance sustainable in both senses of the word. So go ahead, do your part to preserve the Earth and have more than a little fun in the process. What could be more attractive than that?

Tandem bike ride should be on the list, or cargobike date ride! Exercise and bikes are sexy. Warm up your heart each day with some human powered transportation! When you are active and fit, it's a natural aphorodisiac.

Eco Tip

Grow a garden or a fruit tree. A garden is fun, provides exercise, teaches kids about nature, reduces your carbon footprint (since your food need not be shipped to you), and controls what pesticides or chemicals do or do not go into the food you eat. Not to mention how delicious and nutritious fresh-picked fruits and vegetables are! More tips...

Humankind has not woven the web of life.  We are but one thread within it.  Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.  All things are bound together.  All things connect.  - Chief Seattle, leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish Native American tribes, 1855   More quotes...
