LA: When It Rains, It Pours E-mail
Friday, 05 November 2010  |  Joe Donnelly | Commentary

The Los Angeles River with Its Concrete BanksSeems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard
that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But, girl, don't they warn ya
It pours, man, it pours.

- Albert Hammond, “It Never Rains In
Southern California,” 1972

It’s true, it seems it never does rain in Southern California, or at least not in the past four years during which we’ve seen a record-breaking dry spell. It’s been so dry that during one year-long stretch, from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, it rained only 2.43 inches in Los Angeles. Pyrosome Colonial Salp photo by Nick HobgoodAn article in the online version of the UK's Daily Mail, "10 Mad Ways to Save the Planet" by Nigel Blundell, highlights innovative ideas for reversing global warming. It often means the latter are harassed to the point of being driven out of business, less choice for consumers and ultimately less healthy food. Read on...

Black Dog in Pound photo by Oakley OriginalsLarry King has made it official. Black people are "in." (Full disclosure: I thought the term "in" went out with "with it," "groovy," and "keen;" then again, Larry King still wears striped-red suspenders.)

Still, the point is well taken: Yay for melanin! Pigmentation is darned neat! I couldn’t agree more. And if Larry says it’s true for humans, I’m just hoping we can spread the love in the canine direction. Read on…

Monday, 20 February 2012  |  Ryan Miga | Article

Four Presidents in the Oval Office (Two Made Our Eco-Worst List) photo by BL1961Environmental policy has always been complicated. It’s not easy to find a balance between using natural resources to provide the things people need—like jobs, food and housing—and protecting the natural world for its own sake. But some White House residents were downright anti-green. Here are EcoHearth's picks for the least ecological presidents. (Two of them, incidentally, appear in the photograph that illustrates this piece.) Read on...

Stop requesting ATM receipts. Why destroy trees and add to the ATM tumbleweeds blowing around bank machines? Instead, check your balance on screen and write down that number and your withdrawal amount. More tips...
