It’s true, it seems it never does rain in Southern California, or at least not in the past four years during which we’ve seen a record-breaking dry spell. It’s been so dry that during one year-long stretch, from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, it rained only 2.43 inches in Los Angeles. It’s been so bad that Governor Schwarzenegger (and it’s a sign I’ve been here too long that I don’t have to look up how to spell his name) recently declared a state of emergency over the ongoing drought. An article in the online version of the UK's Daily Mail, "10 Mad Ways to Save the Planet" by Nigel Blundell, highlights innovative ideas for reversing global warming. The Discovery Channel will air a program about this topic on February 15th. Some of the solutions, like wrapping up Greenland and creating artificial volcanoes, sound outlandish and don't discuss the trade-offs and risks involved in their execution. But some are intriguing and might present practical ways to tackle our dilemma. Read on…

The documentary film Farmageddon explores the fine line between consumer protection and government intrusion when it comes to food safety. Certainly we all want wholesome food, but what happens when rules written with agribusiness in mind are inflexibly applied to family farms by overzealous regulators? It often means the latter are harassed to the point of being driven out of business, less choice for consumers and ultimately less healthy food. Read on...

Larry King has made it official. Black people are "in." (Full disclosure: I thought the term "in" went out with "with it," "groovy," and "keen;" then again, Larry King still wears striped-red suspenders.)
Still, the point is well taken: Yay for melanin! Pigmentation is darned neat! I couldn’t agree more. And if Larry says it’s true for humans, I’m just hoping we can spread the love in the canine direction. Read on…
